Guidance for Participation by Teams in an Inquest

General

    • No Recording: It is a criminal offence to record or transmit audio or video of a remote Inquest. This includes taking screenshots.
    • Private Space Required: Ideally you should be in a quiet private space with no one else present and where you will not be interrupted or disrupted. If other people are present with you should seek the advice of the Coroner as to whether this is appropriate or not.
    • Turn Off Other Devices: Turn off or put on flight mode all mobile phones or other devices that could interrupt the hearing.
    • Court hearing: Please remember that you are not attending a TEAMS meeting but a formal court hearing.

    Behaviour and Etiquette on Teams

    • Treat it Like a Courtroom: Behaviour must remain formal. Do not eat, smoke, vape, take drugs or drink anything other than water.
    • Mute Microphone: Keep your microphone muted at all times unless speaking to prevent background noise.
    • Camera On/Off: Keep your camera on when the coroner is present but turn it off if instructed or during breaks.
    • Professional Appearance: Dress appropriately for court, as if you were attending in person.
    • Do Not Interrupt: Do not speak over others. Use the “Raise Hand” function or wait for the coroner to invite you to speak.
    • Backgrounds: Use a neutral, tidy background, or use the “blur background” function to maintain privacy and professionalism.
    • Do Not Drive: Do not participate in a hearing while driving.

    Technical and Practical Preparation

    • Test Equipment: Test your camera, microphone, and internet connection in advance. Familiarise yourself with Microsoft Teams. If assistance in joining is required, please email the coroner’s administration team at Coroner@devon.gov.uk at least 1 week before the hearing.
    • Join Early: Click the link about 5–10 minutes before the hearing starts to enter the virtual waiting room.
    • Display Name: Ensure your display name is your full legal name, not a nickname.
    • Use Headphones: Using headphones/earphones can improve audio quality and reduce echo.
    • Emergency Plan: If your connection fails, try to rejoin immediately. Have a phone number for the court available as a backup.

    Special Considerations

    • Children: If you are at home with children, please make appropriate childcare arrangements.
    • Evidence: Ensure you have printed or digital copies of all necessary documents, including the court bundle if you have requested it.
    • Oath / Affirmation – If you are due to give evidence at the inquest, please ensure that you have a copy of the Oath and holy book or affirmation in front of you. Copies of the correct wording can be obtained from Coroner@devon.gov.uk
    • If You Cannot Comply: If you cannot find a private, quiet space or do not have the necessary technology, tell the court as soon as possible.
